Narrative of Known Facts
Michael David Hicks was born February 7, 1964, in Dayton, Ohio. He earned undergraduate degrees from Boston University and a PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in 1997. His doctoral dissertation focused on spectrophotometric surveys of comets and Earth-approaching asteroids.
In 1998 he joined NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher and subsequently became a research scientist, a position he held until 2022. His research specialty was the physical properties of comets and asteroids. He served on the science teams for multiple NASA missions:
- DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test): The first-ever mission dedicated to demonstrating asteroid deflection
- NEAT (Near Earth Asteroid Tracking): An asteroid and comet detection program
- Dawn Mission: Spacecraft that orbited Vesta and Ceres
- Deep Space 1: Technology demonstration mission that also performed a comet flyby
He authored over 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers and received numerous NASA team awards, including recognition for work on the Redirect Mission Concept Development Project, NEAT Team, Dawn Science Team, and Deep Space 1 Comet Team.
His colleague Dr. Joe Masiero, who worked with Hicks for approximately 10 years at JPL, described him as someone who invested heavily in mentoring students.
Outside his scientific career, Hicks was an artist who worked in woodblock prints, oil painting, and metalwork. He played the ukulele and performed during observing runs at Mount Palomar.
He died on July 30, 2023, at age 59 in Sunland, California. His obituary identified him as "an astronomer, artist and father" but did not disclose a cause of death. The AAS Division for Planetary Sciences and the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory both published memorial tributes, neither of which stated a cause of death.
He was survived by his father Richard, daughter Julia, ex-wife Brunella Bigi, and six siblings (Richard, Stephen, Suzette, Jeanette, Paul, and Barbara). He was preceded in death by his mother Joan and infant brother Brian.
His obituary directed charitable donations to al-anon.org.
In April 2026, his death was publicly linked by journalists to a broader pattern of deaths and disappearances of scientists with connections to U.S. defense and aerospace programs. His case was included in House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and Rep. Eric Burlison's letters to NASA, DOE, DOD, and the FBI requesting information. The White House confirmed a federal review of these cases.
Update — 2026-07-05
Daughter's on-camera statement (KATV / local ABC affiliate). A KATV Channel 7 news package ("10 people tied to sensitive US research projects have died recently, sparking investigation," uploaded April 23, 2026) features an on-camera interview with Julia Hicks, who found her father when he died. She states: "He had underlying medical conditions for years and years and years. And when he passed away, I knew why. There was no need for an autopsy for me." On the federal review she adds that her father would be "rolling in his grave knowing that his name is going around being involved in something like this."
This is the first located instance of an immediate family member speaking on the record about the death. It bears directly on Open Questions #1 and #2: it offers a family-sourced explanation (long-standing underlying medical conditions; no autopsy sought by the family) but is not an official cause-of-death disclosure by the LA County Medical Examiner, and does not name the condition. Confidence: Reported (T3 local broadcast; daughter is a primary but interested party). It is consistent with, and independent of, the LA County Coroner finding (arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease; manner: natural) documented separately in appendices/primary-sources/hicks/.

Named Expert Commentary
- Dr. Joe Masiero (JPL colleague, ~10 years): Characterized Hicks as someone who invested heavily in mentoring students.
- Joseph Rodgers (Deputy Director, Project on Nuclear Issues, CSIS): Stated the deaths and missing persons cases "are scattered across several years at different and only loosely affiliated organizations."
- Scott Roecker (VP, Nuclear Threat Initiative): Argued that hostile foreign actors would gain nothing strategically from targeting American nuclear scientists.
- Former DOE official (unnamed): Noted that many facility employees work in mundane roles without classified access, and that natural causes explain many deaths.
- Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO): Publicly stated the pattern "has all the hallmarks of a foreign operation."
Foreign Coverage
- Global Times (Chinese state media): Framed the cases in sensationalized terms, describing them as "unfolding like scenes from a high-stakes thriller." Amplified UFO/UAP conspiracy theories while maintaining plausible deniability. Did not provide independent reporting or evidence.
Contradictions
- Employment timeline ambiguity: Obituary and memorials state Hicks worked at JPL from 1998 to 2022, but he died in 2023. It is unclear whether he retired, was laid off, or left for other reasons in 2022 -- one year before his death. No source explains the gap.
- "No autopsy record found" vs. absence of evidence: Newsweek reported no autopsy record was found, but this could reflect incomplete FOIA/records searches rather than a confirmed absence of autopsy. (updated 2026-10-07 — see Update — 2026-10-07 below)
- Pattern claims vs. skeptics: Congressional members and some media allege a suspicious pattern; CBS News, CSIS analysts, and former DOE officials found no evidence of connection.
Update — 2026-10-07
Scope. News refresh for the window 2026-05-08 → 2026-10-07, applied from the research bundle logs/hicks-news-refresh-2026-10-07.md and §3/§4f/Anomaly 2 of logs/news-refresh-2026-10-07-cross-case.md. Swept: national press, Pasadena and Sunland-Tujunga / Crescenta Valley local press, the LA County Medical Examiner (ME) public case search, video, X/TikTok, Substack/blogs, and foreign coverage. Negative result: no Hicks-specific reporting was located inside the window. In-window items mention him only in cluster roundups (e.g., Laef FM / Vision Christian Media, URL-dated 2026-05-16, which repeats "no cause of death or autopsy details were released") T5. No NYT, WaPo, AP, BBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, Newsweek or Fox Hicks-specific item in window; no local Sunland-Tujunga coverage; no JPL, NASA or Caltech statement on Hicks; no in-window foreign or T8 item. Not performed (search budget exhausted): the "tribute video" Men's Journal mentions; Skeptic (Michael Shermer, 2026-04-25); cluster-level FBI-report check for July–September. Fetch failures (not linked): Men's Journal direct (403; Yahoo mirror used), CNN (451), The Hill (403), NewsNation (403), AAS DPS obituary (still 403). The material below is pre-window but was not previously in this file.
Findings
- Cause of death — the LA County ME record is now attributed by three outlets. (1) Fox 11 LA, already recorded in appendices/primary-sources/hicks/la-county-coroner-cause-of-death.md; (2) Men's Journal (Jessica McBride, 2026-04-11, via Yahoo syndication), describing its own "review of the Los Angeles County Coroner case record": cause arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, "morbid obesity" listed as a significant condition, manner natural, death at residence; and "The case is still listed as open"; (3) LAmag (Lauren Conlin, 2026-04-21 and 2026-04-24), stating the ME's office publicly lists the same cause and condition, with a screenshot credited to the LA Medical Examiner. [T1 record via T3/T4 ×3, Reported — the record itself was not viewed]. It cannot be rated Confirmed yet: the ME public case search (fetched 2026-10-07, HTTP 200) shows a "Case Search Error" banner; search by date of death is still offered. No individual record was fetched.
- "Open" with a natural manner. Men's Journal's statement that the ME lists the case as "open" alongside a natural manner is not explained by any source; it may be an administrative records status rather than an investigative one. Flagged; no inference drawn.
- "Not disclosed" persists downstream. CNN (04-21), Pasadena Now (04-22), The Hill, Newsweek (04-27), NewsNation and most aggregators still say the cause was "not publicly disclosed." This reads as reporting lag behind the ME record, not a contradiction of it.
- Family statements beyond the KATV package (pre-window; T1 family statements via T4; Reported):
- Steve Hicks (brother), TMZ 2026-04-23: the family knows the cause of the July 2023 death and is keeping it private; linking his brother to the other cases is "a bunch of silliness." This is the only located statement explaining why the cause was not disclosed: a family privacy choice.
- Julia Hicks (daughter) to CNN (04-21; CNN 451 on fetch, relayed by Pasadena Now 2026-04-22): her father had known medical issues; the speculation left her "shaken up."
- Both statements and the KATV statement (Update — 2026-07-05 above) are consistent with each other and with a natural-cause ME finding. None names a condition; the family's account is primary for the family's position, not a medical document.
- Colleague on the record. Joe Masiero (lead scientist, NEO Surveyor, IPAC/Caltech; ~10 years alongside Hicks at JPL) to Newsweek (Anna Skinner, 2026-04-18): "He put a lot of work into mentoring the next generation"; disclaims speaking for Caltech, NASA or NEO Surveyor; said he does not think the deaths are connected by a coordinated plot. Says nothing on cause of death or the 2022 departure. [T2 via T4, Reported]. Masiero also contributed to the IPAC Grillmair tribute — the one named individual bridging the Hicks and Grillmair cases professionally.
- Official / cluster level (pre-window). President Trump (Fox News 2026-05-01): the cases are "individual," "some were sick," "We're going to be doing a full report" — no report located as of 2026-10-07. NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens (via Pasadena Now): nothing related to NASA indicates a national-security threat. The House Oversight release now fetches (HTTP 200; previously 403) and links the four April letters with no follow-up readout. [T1/T4, Confirmed as to the statements and the absence of follow-up on that page]
- Mulder-side. No in-window source makes a Hicks-specific allegation. The "undisclosed cause / no autopsy" framing continues in T4 roundups and T5/T7 timelines (strangehappen.com, a Substack on the missing FBI status update, SUNY Cortland Dragon Chronicle; snippets only). A TikTok discover page for a "Michael David Hicks Biography" indicates search interest only. [T5/T7, Speculated]
Anomalies (flagged, not resolved)
- Wikipedia ("Missing scientists conspiracy theory," edited 2026-10-07) misspells him "Michel David Hicks"; lists "Deceased (heart disease)"; says the cause was "later revealed to be heart disease" by the daughter and was not released "at the wishes of the family"; cites CNN, TMZ and Skeptic. The TMZ piece states no cause, the daughter's KATV statement does not name heart disease, and the ME record and the three outlets that reviewed it are not cited. Attributing "heart disease" to the daughter appears to merge the ME record with her remarks. Not propagated. T5
- Date typo: at least one aggregator snippet gives July 20, 2023 vs July 30 (obituary).
- Cluster count drift: 10 (CNN/BBC) → 11 (Fox LA/Newsweek) → 12 (The Independent) → 13 (Burlison); Hicks remains the earliest case in every count.
Corrections to existing content
- L5
**Status:**("cause of death not publicly disclosed; no autopsy record found") — cause now Reported via the ME record as described by three outlets; whether an autopsy (as opposed to an ME case record) exists is still not stated by any source. - L9 (inclusion rationale: "no publicly disclosed cause of death") — same; rationale text left as written.
- L91 (Oversight release "403 on fetch") — now HTTP 200.
- L118 (Contradiction 2, "no autopsy record found") — an ME case record exists per three outlets; autopsy status still unstated.
- Related Cases, Grillmair bullet ("cause of death remains undisclosed") and Analysis Cross-References, H3 bullet ("undisclosed cause of death creates irreducible uncertainty") — cause now Reported; the H3 note is left for the analysis layer to revisit.
- Open Questions 1 — marked; see status below.
Open Questions — status
- Cause of death — closed at Reported: arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, manner natural, per the LA County ME record as described by Fox 11, Men's Journal and LAmag. Upgrade to Confirmed requires a direct record retrieval (ME case search by date of death 2023-07-30 when the tool is working).
- Was an autopsy conducted — narrowed: an ME case record exists; no source says whether an autopsy or an external examination was performed. The daughter said she saw no need for one (KATV).
- Departure from JPL in 2022 — unchanged.
- Clearance status — unchanged.
- Al-Anon donation request — unchanged; no new source addresses it.
- Agency response to the Comer/Burlison inquiry — unchanged: the Oversight page shows no follow-up; the "full report" promised 2026-05-01 has not been located.
Pending / not resolved
- Direct retrieval of the ME record (case search currently in error state); meaning of the "open" status.
- Browser save of the Men's Journal original (403 on automated fetch; Yahoo mirror 200).
- The family "tribute video" Men's Journal mentions — not located.
Related Cases
- Monica Reza and Frank Maiwald — All three worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Hicks (1998–2022) in planetary science, Reza in materials processing, Maiwald (~1999–2024) in space instrumentation. No shared projects or documented professional connections. Together they form the JPL institutional cluster.
- Carl Grillmair — Both worked in the LA County area on space science (Hicks at JPL, Grillmair at Caltech/IPAC). Grillmair's case has a named suspect; Hicks' cause of death remains undisclosed. Both are part of the LA County geographic cluster. (updated 2026-10-07 — see Update — 2026-10-07 below)
Analysis Cross-References
- Connection analysis — Institutional co-employment (JPL cluster) — Hicks is part of the three-person JPL cluster
- Connection analysis — Temporal clustering — Hicks (July 2023) is a pre-cluster death, retroactively added
- Hypotheses — H3 (Institutional clustering, JPL) — Hicks' undisclosed cause of death creates irreducible uncertainty for this hypothesis (updated 2026-10-07 — see Update — 2026-10-07 below)
- Hypotheses — H8 (Independent events misgrouped) — Al-Anon donation request and JPL departure in 2022 may indicate personal context
Open Questions
- What was the cause of death? No source -- including the obituary, professional memorials, or media reporting -- has disclosed the cause of death. (updated 2026-10-07 — see Update — 2026-10-07 below)
- Was an autopsy conducted? Media reports state no record was found, but this has not been confirmed by the LA County Medical Examiner.
- Why did he leave JPL in 2022? His employment ended a year before his death. Was this retirement, a layoff (JPL had budget-related layoffs), health-related, or voluntary?
- What was his security clearance status? Media reports group him with scientists who had "high-level security clearances," but no source confirms his specific clearance level. JPL scientists working on planetary science missions may not require the same clearances as those on defense projects.
- The al-anon.org donation request: The obituary directs donations to Al-Anon, a support organization for families of people with alcohol use disorders. This may provide context for personal circumstances but is not dispositive.
- Did any federal agency (FBI, NASA, DOE) respond to the Comer/Burlison inquiry regarding Hicks specifically? No public response has been reported as of April 2026.
